CONTRACT PRESSING

We can press your oilseed for you.

Contract pressing is an inexpensive way of testing the demand for cold pressed oils in your area before commiting to purchase equipment and spending on other set-up costs.

Alternatively, if you are only likely to sell smaller quantities, for example if you have a farm shop or a stall at one or two farmers markets then intermittent contract pressing may make more economic sense than capital investment in your own equipment.

We can press your seed and return the oil to you in any container you like - For example: 1 ton of rapeseed would give you about 600 to 650 half litre bottles of beautifully clear cold pressed extra virgin oil with a metal tamper proof screw top and integral oil pourer. British cold pressed rapeseed oil is earning a reputation for being far better that olive oil both for its health properties and its taste. This is a growing market with cold pressed rapeseed oil now beginning to nudge olive oil off the supermarket and deli shelves. This service is a great way to test the market, if you find after a few batches there is a good demand then we can assist you to set up your own plant and customers are always welcome to visit our set-up to see what is involved.

We have full HACCP procedures in place and have been approved by environmental health and trading standards. We currently contract press for a few farmers one of whom supplies to TESCO, we supply our own oil to local shops and Morrisons in the North East.

If you want us to have labels printed (from your artwork) then we can do that and stick them on.

We can also fill the oil into food grade plastic 'jerry cans' of 2.5 litre, 5 litre or 25 litre etc for the catering market, restaurants, hotels, etc.

Price per bottle is around £1.00 for your rapeseed pressed, filtered and filled into your 500ml bottles - or about £1.30 if we use our bottle (or buy the bottle for you). The typical retail price for 500ml bottles of cold pressed rapeseed is around £4.90 (the price you would get at a farmer's market / farm shop) or £3.50 wholesale (the price you would get supplying to a deli, supermarket or retail shop).

Here is a rough estimate of what your costs would be:
Cost of transport of 1 ton to us £50ish, so per bottle approx 50/620= £ 0.08
Cost of pressing, filtering and bottling (inc bottle): £ 1.30
Your seed per bottle (@£300/ton) £ 0.48 (or whatever the current price of OSR is)
Cost of the label approx £ 0.10
Cost of transport of bottles back to you £ 0.08
Total each bottle approx £2.00 
Wholesale to retailers typically £3.50, retail (i.e. farmers markets or your farm shop) £4.95

As you can see you can test the market at a reasonable profit using our contract pressing service. If it looks promising then you may want to set up your own plant. Alternatively if you are actually selling at retail (to farmers markets or in your own farm shop) then there is a very healthy profit to be had from our contract pressing service.
